“Take a Message” was released in 2001 as the lead single from his debut album, The Way I Feel. The song reached #89 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and #47 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles & Tracks chart. In Canada, it was among the top 25 most played songs in 2002 and ended the year at #21 on the Canada Radio chart. This song is Shand’s only entry on the Billboard Hot 100 to date.
Note about Canadian chart data between 2000-2007
Following the closure of RPM magazine in 2000, the tracking of Canadian singles shifted across various charts. This change particularly emphasized sales, despite the limited release of domestic singles in Canada at the time. This transition period in the Canadian music charting system makes the Nielsen/BDS Canadian Radio chart a more reliable indicator of a song’s success during this era. The limited availability of physical singles in the late 1990s led to a decline in their sales, and by March 2006, Billboard reported that most number-one singles on the Canadian Singles Chart had sold less than 200 copies. Consequently, in March 2006, Nielsen Entertainment Canada introduced the Canadian Digital Songs Chart, focusing on digital music download sales, leading Billboard to cease publishing the Canadian Singles Chart in favor of the new format.
